2009.104: Cultcha Shock
I am now approaching the half way mark: Soon I will have lived half my
life in Europe and half in the United States. I am a dual national now
as well. Going back and forth between France and the USA has initiated
many perplexing moments. When I worked in a French company, I went to
Huntsville, AL for a couple of weeks with French colleagues. What I
have seen over the last 30 some years is mostly "plus ça change, plus
ça reste le même". People are very much the same all over: victims or
beneficiaries of their own cultural education. Many people believe
that their country is the best in the world, but that's usually based
on extremely limited if any experience elsewhere. Here are a couple of
things people have asked me over the years:
"Who is the current King of France?"
That's easy, whoever the coach (if they're winning) or star player
(usually not originally French) of the soccer team.
I got distracted, and now I can't remember the second funny question.
I was in Germany last week, and I thought this scene was a lot of fun.
